Seven Guns for Timothy (1966)

Seven Guns for Timothy (1966) posterSean Flynn plays Timothy Benson, owner of a mine that outlaw Rodrigo Rodriguez (Fernando Sancho) wants for his own.

After Rodriguez has all the workers at the mine massacred, Timothy’s foreman (Poldo Bendandi as Corky) decides it’s time to take matters into his own hands.

So he looks up five old friends, including a knife expert, a boxer and a gunman (Daniel Martin as Slim) who already holds a grudge against Rodriguez. Then he takes them to meet, and toughen up, his boss.

Once Timothy learns to stop being an “abstainer” and fend for himself, the “seven magnificent guns” begin to turn the tables on Rodriguez.

But then the six are captured, leaving Timothy and girlfriend Coralie (Evelyn Stewart) to fend for themselves as Rodriguez and his small army descend on their home.

Rating 3 out of 6Review:

A cross between The Magnificent Seven and any one of a number of tenderfoot Westerns in which a dude from the East goes West and needs to be toughened up. In this case, Sean Flynn — son of Errol — plays the dude, pretty convincingly.

The best scenes are the ones in which the abstainer — Timothy Benson’s nickname because he abstains from alcohol — is being trained by the men Corky rounds up.

In one such scene, Timothy can’t hit anything with a six-gun. Then he darts inside, does mathematical equations with both hands at the same time and rushes back outside his home, transformed into the deadliest shot in the West.

Ida Galli — typically billed as Evelyn Stewart — plays the woman in love with Timothy because he’s so different, but who frets once he’s toughened up because she fears his new-found courage will get him into trouble. Oh, she also has to fend off the advances of Rodriguez, who would like to add her to his stable of wives.

It all adds up to a so-so comedy Western.

Memorable lines:

Timothy to Abel: “I don’t drink because I’m an abstainer.”
Abel: “Is that some sort of plague?”

Sheriff: “Do you have a minute, Rodriquez?”
Rodriquez: “Call me excellency, punk. Or are you too drunk?”

Coralie, as bullets fly from the guns of Rodriguez’s men: “I’m not the least bit afraid to die with you by my side, Timothy.”
Timothy Benson: “Who said anything about dying? We’ve got a lot of fighting to do before we’re through.”
