Three Amigos! (1986)

The Three Amigos (1986) posterChevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short are cowboy heroes on the silver screen, singing and dancing cowboys no less.

Only the residents in a Mexican village that’s under the thumb of the vicious El Guapo (Alfronso Arua) don’t understand the pretend part.

So they decide to send to the Three Amigos for help.

The confusion might have ended there if the villagers had enough money to send a full telegram.

They don’t, so the telegram the Three Amigos receives sounds as though they’re going to be paid a princely sum for a couple performances south of the border.

Imagine everyone’s surprise when Hollywood cowboys show up to encounter a real-life bandit.

Review:

Put Chase, Martin and Short in the same film, and you’re bound to have your share of laughs.

None better than near the end, when the villagers decide they do one thing well — they can sew. The sewing proves to be El Guapo’s downfall.

Oh, yeah, the film comes complete with a score by Randy Newman. He also provides the voice for the Singing Bush. He also co-wrote the script.

Memorable lines:

Lucky Day: “In a way, all of us has an El Guapo to face. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo. For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo. For us, El Guapo is a big, dangerous man who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be the actual El Guapo!”

Juanita, of the Three Amigos: “Which one do you like?”
Carmen: “I like the one that’s not so smart.”
Juanita: “Which one is that?”

Lucky Day: “Well, we’re just gonna have to use our brains.”
Ned Nederlander, Dusty Bottoms: “Damn it!”

El Guapo: “Jefe, you do not understand women. You cannot force open the petals of a flower. When the flower is ready, it opens itself up to you.”
Jefe: “So when do you think Carmen will open up her flower to you?”
El Guapo: “Tonight, or I will kill her!”

Lucky Day: “I’ll come back one day.”
Carmen: “Why?”
