Joe Cornet is Cole, a gunman who rides into the town of Sudden with a back full of bullets.
They’ve been put there courtesy of The Preacher (Curt Lambert), who talks fire and brimstone, but isn’t above robbing and killing to get what he wants.
And what both men want is a stash of gold hidden immediately after Appamatox by a secret society hoping to launch a second Civil War.
Cole figures that gold will set he and his feisty lover Mattie (Dianne Renee) up for life.
As for Mattie, she’s more concerned about Cole’s safety than the gold.
The key to finding the gold is a map torn in two. And the pieces of that map are in the hands of the two widows of the late and bigamous Col. Jacoby.
The film opens with Dr. July Harrigan talking Cole’s ear off as he plucks bullets from his back. Okay, you figure, that’s just part of the doctor’s character.
Nope. These characters talk and talk and talk some more while very little ever happens. They might be talking to cover the fact that the film was made on a shoestring budget.
Lambert overacts in the villain’s role, and not in a good or memorable way. Cornet’s laid-back approach to his part is even less memorable.
The film does come complete with a neat final kill and a nice twist at the end, but that can’t salvage 90 minutes of boredom.
