Blindman (1971)

Blindman (1971) posterTony Anthony stars as the Blindman, who’s been hired to escort 50 mail order brides to a mining camp in Lost Creek, Texas.

Problem is, a man called Skunk has absconded with the 50 women.

So Blindman tracks down Skunk. Problem is, he’s sold the 50 women to a Mexican bandit named Domingo.

With the help of his brother Candy (Ringo Starr) and sister (Magda Konopka), Domingo uses the 50 women to lure a unit of Mexican soldiers into a trap, killing the soldiers and capturing their general.

Then Blindman shows up, determined to get back his 50 women. After all, he has a contract. And he’ll stop at nothing to fulfill it.

Pilar (Agneta Eckemyer), Candy’s reluctant lover, might even help.

Rating 4 out of 6Review:

Well-done Spaghetti and likely Tony Anthony’s best effort in a Western. Oh, the plot is far from masterful, but Ferdinando Baldi serves up a Spaghetti that seems fresh and original. By 1971, that was no small feat.

You won’t find many Spaghetti scenes more bizarre than the one in which the 50 mail order brides, in white robes, are desperately running through the sand trying to escape Domingo’s men as they ride down on them. Or Domingo coldly killing those who appear likely to escape.

The film offers up some memorable lines, some lovely ladies, and some other memorable scenes. And one of the most brutal final showdowns you’ll find. Before that, there’s a wrestling match between Sweet Mama and the Blindman that’s quite unique too.

If there’s a false note, it’s the performance of Raf Baldassarre as the Mexican general who seems to laugh at everything, trying to lend a touch of comedy that really isn’t needed and doesn’t come off as very funny.

Memorable lines:

Blindman: “Let me tell you something, Pilar. To have no eyes, is to be half a man. To have no eyes and no money … now that’s a bitch.”

Blindman: “Well, Sweet Mama, I guess the sun don’t shine on the same dog’s ass all the time.”

Domingo: “I can’t read you know. But this looks like a contract. I’ll solve this little problem. Now you don’t have a contract. Because I burn it.”
Blindman: “Now let me give you some good advice you Mexican pig: You better burn me too.”

Candy: “Who killed my men?”
Blindman: “I don’t know. I didn’t see a thing.”

Blindman, about Candy: “When you lose your head over a pair of knickers, it’s over friend. Finished.”

Blindman, as Domingo and his men arrive for a final showdown: “How many are there?”
Pilar: “About 15.”
Blindman: “That’s enough.”

Trivia:

A sign as Blindman rides into town in the film’s opening reads: “Have Fun with Your Gun, ‘Big Inch’ Rifle Association.

This was far from the only venture into acting for Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr. Ten years later, for instance, he starred as Atouk in “Caveman,” where he vied for the affection of Shelley Long of Cheers fame.

Agneta Marie-Anne Eckemyer, who plays the American beauty Candy (Ringo Starr) with whom is infatuated, was a Swedish-born model who went on to grace the cover of Playboy in October 1975. She later became a clothing designer. The marked the first of about 12 films in which she’d appear.
