Jay Pickett is Britt McMasters, a marshal with a nasty reputation for bringing them back dead.
But one man he didn’t bring back dead — Jed Blake (Gattlin Griffith) — is about to cause him lots of problems.
While McMasters is away chasing another outlaw, Blake and his gang, fresh off a pair of robberies, visit the McMasters’ spread.
Before they leave, McMasters’ dad (Tom Skerritt) is lying on the porch with a potentially fatal wound. A young friend of McMasters’ son Chad is dead.
As for Chad (Mason McNulty), he’s taken prisoner by Jed, who knows Britt will surely follow, giving him a chance to settle an old score.
Britt indeed sets out in pursuit, accompanied by greenhorn deputy Clay Tucker and half-breed tracker Chaska.
McMaster will need the help. Because Jed and his gang have fled into Sioux country.
Not bad for a Western released in 2021. The budget allowed for multiple horses, for crying out loud!
Sure, the scene in which the villain loses an eye is hokey. The attacks by Sioux warriors aren’t very well done.
But Jay Pickett and Gattlin Griffith turn in gritty performances as the leads, and you’ll find a far less convincing cast in many of the low-budget Westerns being released these days.
Certainly worth a look for Western aficionados.

Memorable lines:
Marshal Britt McMasters: “Nate Mason, I’m arresting you on three counts of murder — bank president and bank guard in Casper, Deputy Bill Clark in Laramie. I’m also arresting you for the robbery of those banks.”
Nate Mason: “Damn, marshal, I’ve done a hell of a lot more than that.”
McMasters: “Those are the ones I’ve got paper on.”
Jed Blake to Dex McMasters: “You mind putting that rifle down, mister. Them things is dangerous, don’t ya know? We don’t want no dead geezer on the front porch. Do we?”
York to Britt McMasters, on his habit of bringing them in dead: “Marshal, that hangman’s son is gonna starve if you don’t get out of this business.”
Silas, about captured Chad McMasters: “You’d better let the kid ride tomorrow. If those Indians come down on us, we’re gonna have to move fast.”
Jed Blake: “Well, if he can’t keep up, drag him.”
Silas: “He’s a kid, Jed. Damn, even I’ve got a little compassion.”
Jed: “That’s why you’re followin’, Silas, not leading.”
