Haylie Duff is Annie, a pregnant doctor who travels from Kansas to Sikeston, Missouri, for a pre-birth visit with her best friend, Dr. Belinda Owens (Sarah Owens).
Belinda has settled down in Sikeston with her blacksmith husband (Jordan Bridges a Lee) and their adopted teenage daughter (Courtney Halverson as Lillian).
Belinda figures her medical training makes her the perfect person to watch over Annie while Annie’s husband is off on a new job as a surveyor.
But when complications arrive with the pregnancy, so does Annie’s mother-in-law Mary (Patty Duke). And Mary has spent decades serving as a midwife.
Belinda’s training and Mary’s folk remedies immediately clash, causing friction between the women.
And Annie’s arrival has stirred feelings of unhappiness and inadequacy in Belinda, who just can’t seem to get pregnant.
Meanwhile, Lee frets that Lillian is growing up too fast when she takes a liking to his newly arrived intern, Joshua (Michael Trevino).
As predictable as any Hallmark Christmas movie. Heck, maybe even more so. And if you’re looking for gritty Western action and realism, look elsewhere.
Not a gunshot is fired in this film’s 89 minutes. This is a movie where a smudge of dirt on a handsome blacksmith’s face is a major nod toward authenticity.
A villain? The closest we get is an unappreciative husband who won’t allow his anemic wife to eat more veggies because he’s a meat and potatoes guy.
All that aside, this is a likeable, feel-good family film thanks to a very likeable cast. Patty Duke. in her mid-60s and 40 years removed from the sitcom that bore her name, lends a surprising and much needed bit of gusto in her role as the midwife.
This marked the eighth film in Hallmark’s Love Comes Softly series, following “Love Takes Wing,” which also starred Sarah Jones and Haylie Duff. It was followed by a prequel, “Love Begins” (2010).
