More Wild, Wild West (1980)

More Wild, Wild West (1980) VHS coverRobert Conrad is Jim West and Ross Martin is Artemus Gordon, special agents lured out of retirement by an international crisis.

Albert Paradine II, son of a madman, has detonated bombs in London, Paris, Berlin and Madrid and seems hellbent on world domination.

So Secret Service chief Robert T. “Skinny” Malone (Harry Morgan) dispatches West and Gordon to Parson’s Ridge, Nevada, to take Paradine into custody and elminate the threat.

They soon discover that might not be easy.

In addition to developing a bomb more powerful than the world has known before, Paradine has created a handheld device that makes him invisible.

How do you take a man into custody if he can make himself disappear with the press of a button? And if you get him into your custody, how can you hold him?

Then comes more bad news: Paradine is planning to set off another bomb. In Washington, D.C. During a peace conference attended by ambassadors from all over the world.

Of course, it falls for West and Gordon to keep that from happening.

Review:

The second of two TV movies reuniting Conrad and Martin as West and Gordon, the characters they had played for four seasons on CBS’s “Wild, Wild West” TV series.

It’s campy. It’s silly. Our heroes find themselves dangled over hungry lions at one point. West is threatened with a cobra at another. And he’s constantly hounded by a band of angry Mexicans spurred on by a spurned lover named Juanita.

There’s lot of pretty faces. And Victor Buono as Secretary of State Henry Messenger, a takeoff on Henry Kissinger, a takeoff with lots of resemblance to “Dr. Strangelove” (1964).

After watching, you might be surprised to learn that the original series wasn’t canceled because of low ratings, but rather a move to cut back on the violence on TV.

The first TV movie was “Wild Wild West Revisited,” which aired in 1979, 10 year after the series was canceled. Any plans for more movies ended when Martin died of a heart attack at age 61 in 1981.

Memorable lines:

Jim West: “Did you kill your four brothers?”
Albert Paradin II: “Yes. Yes I did.”
West: “Why?”
Paradine: “They were a disgrace to the Paradime name. They suddenly became decent, honest, God-fearing men. They had to go!

Jim West: “With all of this, why do you want to conquer the world?”
Albert Paradine II: “It’s part of the Paradine tradition to want to conquer the world. It’s in the Paradine blood. To ask a Paradine not to conquer the world is like asking a baby not to cry.”

Dr. Henry Messenger to Paradine: “Now you evil, brilliant, fellow you. Come along with me. We’ve got secrets to share.”
