Sartana Kills Them All (1970)

Sartana Kills Them All (1970) posterGianni Garko is Sartana and Guglielmo Spoletini (William Bogard) is Marcos, partners cheated out of a $100,000 payday by the Burton brothers.

Surrounded, they play a hand of poker to decide who will stay behind to keep the posse busy and who will go after the money.

Marcos wins the hand, but Sartana quickly proves he cheated, then slips away under a hail of gunfire.

Marcos winds up in jail, but not for long. He convinces Deputy Smitty to let him escape in return for half of that $100,000.

Of course, that’s a short-lived partnership.

But no sooner do Sartana and Marcos rid themselves of the deputy than they find themselves with a new third partner, pretty Maria Anderson (Maria Silva).

She’s been cheated out of her home and the saloon her father owned by crooked land grabbers, so she’s on the lookout for a fat payday.

And Sartana and Marcos seem like likely allies, especially since she’s able to charm them both with her hate for the law and her pretty smile.

But will the partnership between Saratana and Marcos survive the addition of a pretty lady both would like to bed.

Review:

A light-hearted romp through the Spaghetti West, though the film turns violent often enough to keep fans of the genre happy.

And, get this, there are at least three saloon scenes. And not a single barroom brawl. Now that’s impressive.

Garko is as smooth as ever in the lead role. Guglielmo provides most of the humor as his scheming sidekick.

And Maria Silva has an interesting role as the fiesty female who could cause a break in their friendship.

How fiesty? She lost her home and her dad’s saloon. She burns both down to keep the crooked Brian Lester from profitting.

And she might play up to Sartana and Marcos, but this isn’t a woman looking to marry and settle down.

Her dream: Get enough money to open another saloon so she can make even more.

Memorable lines:

Carmencita, Marcos’s girl, trying to explain how she wound up in bed with Sartana: “But he said you had been killed. With boots on.”
Marcos: “What difference do boots make? I suppose you wouldn’t have dragged him into your bed if I had been killed barefoot?”

Marcos, forever the schemer, to Sartana: “You’re sneaky, amigo. I’m beginning to think you’re a bad influence on me.”

Richard Kirby: “You mother, Patrick, could put away a whole bottle of whiskey without taking a breath. Yeah, she was a real woman.”

Marcos, after Sartana suggests Maria is grumpy because she hasn’t had a man recently: “Goodnight, Sartana.” He heads off to where she has bedded down for the night.
“Tomorrow, she will be relaxed and happy.”
Sartana: “You wanna take a bet on that?”
Gunfire rings out. Marcos comes running back.
Marcos: “That woman doesn’t need a man. She needs a mountain lion.”

Sartana, walking back into camp and finding someone eating his food: “You mind telling me where you learned your manners.”
Donald Kirby: “From behind this scattergun.”

Trivia:

Gianni Garko’s character is Santana in the Italian and German versions of the films, Sabata in France and Sartana in the U.S. That’s in spite of the fact that his character in this film bears no resemblance to the smartly-dressed gunman in the films for which Garko is most famous.

One of the film’s highlights is the rollicking title tune, sung by Peter Boom. He also performed on songs in “For Gunman of the Holy Trinity,” “A Man Called Amen” and “Blood at Sundown.”

Beginning in 1962 with “Shades of Zorro,” Maria Silva appeared in 10 Euro Westerns. Four of those were Zorro type films. Along with 1968’s “Kill the Wicked,” this was one of her meatier Spaghetti roles. Maria died in March 2023 at age 81.
