The Company of Thieves (2025)

Tony Noto is the thief who finally gets up the nerve to go through with a holdup and walks out of the Carson City bank with $30,000 in cash.

He heads to the hills, ditches his horse and heads into the high country on foot. His destination: A fresh start in New York City.

Hunter C. Smith is a marshal hellbent to ensure that doesn’t happen.

The Carson City bank is owned by some very wealthy men. And the marshal wouldn’t mind making some very wealthy friends in his quest for power.

His plan is to put the best tracker he knows on the thief’s trail, with orders to bring back the man and the money.

The best tracker he knows is a young Indian woman named Washoe, who agrees to take the assignment. Provided she receives $500.

It doesn’t take long for Washoe to find the thief. After all, he isn’t much of a frontiersman.

But he comes to her rescue when she’s caught by fur trappers who want the bag of loot she’s carrying.

And Washoe eventually agrees to become his partner, guide him to Reno and teach him some survival skills.

For half of the loot, of course.

Review:

Another example of the fact that you don’t need a massive budget — or even characters riding horses — to make an entertaining Western.

Director Viduran Roopan’s debut film looks beautiful and features solid performances from all three leads.

The focus is on the Thief and Washoe and their journey, which includes a journey toward friendship.

But it’s an uneasy friendship and the script does a nice job of creating suspense as to who’s really aligned with whom.

Naomi Heln Weissberg’s acting credits include two episodes of the INSP series “Into the Wild Frontier,” playing Sacagawea. the Shoshone woman who traveled with Lewis and Clark.
