Rumer Willis is Katherine Atherton, who’s just delivered the news that she’s pregnant when three men come calling for her husband Caleb.
They’ve been dispatched by Col. Davis (Jeff Fahey) and they’re looking for information on something called the Woods.
Seems Caleb was a Pinkerton Agent during the Civil War, one who infiltrated Southern society as a spy. He and his colleagues all used surnames that ended in Wood.
When Caleb refuses to divulge information about other Woods, he’s killed. Frank Cooper, Davis’s lead henchman, spares Katherine because she’s in a family way.
She warns him that he’ll regret that decision.
Vowing vengeance, she turns to one of Caleb’s wartime colleagues, John Scobell (Gbenga Akinnagbe) for help. Her reluctantly agrees.
Meanwhile, Colonel Davis’s men continue their hunt until they believe they’ve killed all the Woods.
After all, Davis is eyeing a run for a senate seat in Kentucky. He can’t have nasty wartime secrets coming to light and ruining his political ambitions.
Then he learns of Katherine’s survival. And sends his men to eliminate that loose end.

Rumer Willis as Katherine Atherton, looking for answers after the death of her husband, even at the point of a gun in Trail of Vengeance (2025)

Gbenga Akinnagbe as John Scobell, a friend of Katherine’s husband who winds up helping her in Trail of Vengeance (2025)
Worth a watch at a time when genre fans have been forced to endure countless Westerns made on budgets so tiny the scripts have to make an excuse for the lack of horses.
But keep your expectations low. This script won’t stand up to much scrutiny. For instance: Why the hell are all the Woods still neighbors to the man they spied on 10 years earlier?
And something didn’t work when the scenes featuring the heroes — the parts played by Rumer Willis and Gbenga Akinnagve — are less interesting than the ones featuring Davis’s henchmen — Eric Nelson and James Landry Hebert.
Rumer is the eldest child of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, and the film eventually gives her a chance to go Die Hard on the villains.
The supporting cast includes Graham Greene in a small role as a trading post owner. And Jeff Fahey in a larger one as the evil Col. Davis.
Speaking of Fahey, his character must be deaf not to hear the trouble his henchman is having disposing of Katherine Atherton, just one room over, in one of the film’s climaticg scenes.
But, hey, this film looks great. And it has horses. That’s something.

Jeremy Sumpter as Caleb, Katherine’s husband, returning home to a surprise in Trail of Vengeance (2025)
Memorable lines:
Katherine Atherton: “Can you help me?”
John Scobell, living in a rundown cabin: “Look around. Does it look like I’m in any shape to help you?”
John Scobell, unimpressed with Katherine’s manhunting skills: “I’m going to get my bed roll. Try not to die while I’m gone.”
John Scobell, explaining how he came to know Col. Davis: “I assumed the cover of an illiterate servant to him. Our mission was cut short when we were arrested and tried for being spies. Webster was sentenced to death. Laughton was sentenced to a year in prison. And they released me. The Confederates couldn’t believe a slave could be a spy.”
Katherine Atheron, of Col. Davis: “So Caleb and the others, he had them killed? So he could cover up all the blood he spilled? You were right, Scobell. He’s a very bad man.”
Frank: “Shit. She shot me. The bitch shot my ear off.”
