Mackenzie Foy is Adeline Elizabeth Horn, “Ada” for short, left alone in a Western outpost in Calfornia’s Cascade Mountains in the final year of the Civil War.
Her father, a former Pinkerton agent in charge of the supply station, has died. Ada has decided to abandon the post and head to San Francisco, hoping to find relatives of her mother.
But she keeps being pulled back to the post, first by a drifting ruffian named Perry Parker who needs food and “borrows” some of her late father’s clothing.
In the process, he drops a gold coin. And Ada remembers seeing a man digging on a ridge. She visits the site, digs herself, and finds a whole satchel filled with gold coins.
So she sets off for San Francisco. Only to stumble across a dead mule and a wounded young woman. She take the woman back to the outpost for treatment.
It’s no longer deserted. Four men dressed in Union blue are there, along with a captured thief named Perry Parker.
Seems Parker stole their gold. Seems Parker refuses to tell them where it is.
It doesn’t take long for Ada to realize the men aren’t soldiers at all. And the woman is a captive they’ve turned into their personal whore.
Ada also realizes her life likely depends on keeping her own secret from Fiddler John Good (Sean Bean), leader of this band of renegades.

And, once in a blue moon, a director figures out how to make a Western in the 2020s.
Find a small cast of capable actors and actresses. Put them in a story that doesn’t require elaborate sets or large-scale action scenes.
Write an original script filled with tension. And, presto, you have a very solid film, well worth watching.
Mackenzie Foy does a wonderful job in the lead role, using her smarts to keep her secret stash of coin until a discarded money bag gives her away.
That’s when director John Suits dials up the tension, as Ada and Emily Moore finds themselves in a desperate struggle to survive against four cold-blooded killers.

Memorable lines:
Perry Parker to Ada, as he leaves the outpost: “Best I can wish you now is that the rain comin’ my way don’t fall on you none.”
Ada Horn, speaking to her parents’ portraits: “I fear I am dead in this place without this gold, so I took it. Do not judge me. You raised me well enough, but you have not been where I am.”
Ada Horn, as Fiddler talks about the gold field of California: “I’m not interested in gold.”
Fiddler John Good: “Everyone is interested in gold, Ada.”
Ada Horn: “Did you kill those soldiers?”
John Good: “What soldiers, Ada?”
Ada: “The ones whose uniforms you’re wearing.”
John Good: “Thanks for your hospitality, Ada. Maybe one day you will grow into a great outlaw yourself.”
Ada Horn: “Thank you, sir.”
