Frontier Crucible (2025)

Frontier Crucible (2025) posterThe fever is raging in the community of San Carlos, where the residents are desperately in need of medical supplies.

So Maj. O’Rourke sends Merrick Beckford (Myles Clohessy) south, figuring a single wagon driven by a single man is more likely to make it through Apache country than a cavalry patrol.

Beckford isn’t alone for long. He stumbles upon a small group of people who have survived an Apache attack, but lost all of their horses.

That group includes three outlaws fleeing a bank robbery. They’re led by Charlies “Mule” McKee (Thomas Jane).

The survivors also includes Valerie Butler (Mary Stickley), a pretty blonde with a severely wounded husband. He’s discovered the West might be more difficult to survive than the Civil War.

Beckford agrees to help the stranded five, even though it’s clear the three outlaws would rather turn his mules and wagon around and head north to the nearest cavalry post.

But Beckford is determined to complete his mission, one that turns more perilous when McKee’s son kills an Apache scout, increasing the likelihood of a reunion with that Apache war party.

Review:

Travis Mills directed two excellent 2021 Westerns, “Heart of the Gun” and “She Was the Deputy’s Wife.” So it was going to be interesting so see what he could do with a larger budget and a film headed to theatrical release.

The results are disappointing in a Western that starts hitting false notes with the opening scene.

With hostile Apache on the loose, why is a cavalry major taking a small patrol to Monument Valley to meet our hero on a cliff and give him marching orders?

And why is a single box of medical supplies being transported in a wagon when the lack of speed with which the mules can travel is repeatedly cited as a problem? Wouldn’t a pack horse do?

As for the plot, it’s going to remind you of a pair of Randolph Scott classics, “Ride Lonesone” and “Comanche Station.” In both films, Scott is accompanied by traveling companions likely to cause him problems at some point. In both films, the traveling together makes sense.

Here, it doesn’t. And this film certainly doesn’t match those in terms of their tightly directed efficiency. Perhaps the biggest question of all is why this film has a runtime of more than 2 hours.

Want bright spots? Myles Clohessy looks the part of a Western hero. Mary Stickley lights up the screen with her beauty. Thomas Jane delights in his role as a outlaw hero. And if you like gory violence, this film serves up plenty in the final 15 minutes.

Memorable lines:

Merrick Beckford, getting his orders: “The notion of riding through Apache country alone doesn’t make me mirthful, major.”

Charlie “Mule” McKee, watching a wagon approach: “Looks like the time I paid two nickels in church about to pay off.”

Charlie “Mule” McKee, arguing for a speedy retreat from the site of the attack in spite of Valerie’s wounded husband: “She can get another husband. Ain’t one of us can grow a new scalp.”

Merrick Beckford, after outlaw Edmund Fisher has tried to rape Valerie: “How’d your man get so unraveled?”
Charlie “Mule” McKee: “Well, he got into some of that medicinal alcohol in the wagon. Didn’t increase his intelligence much.”

Merrick Beckford: “A man’s gotta be able to stand by what he does at night when the noon time sun is shining down on him.”

Charlie “Mule” McKee, as he faces the crucible: “I have been staring at death for many years. I am used to his gaze.”
