Hooded Angels (2000)

The Civil War is winding down and the town of Silver Creek is raided by Confederate guerrillas. Children and old women are gunned down in the streets.

The young women have it tougher. After being beaten and raped repeatedly, Hannah (Chatelle Stander) goes looking for her 4-year-old son. She finds him with a bullet through his chest.

She also finds a gun nearby, picks it up and begins firing at every uniform in sight.

Flash forward three years, and Hannah has organized the survivors of Silver Creek into a gang of female outlaws, hitting banks across Texas.

They’re so successful because no one even considers the possibility that the hooded bandits staging the daring holdups could be females.

Hannah’s gang includes The Widow (Amanda Donahoe), her co-leader of sorts; and Ellie (Julianna Venter), Hannah’s lesbian lover.

During a lull between jobs, Hannah and her hooded angels cross paths with four cowpokes. Hannah falls for one of the men, named Wes (Paul Johansson).

What she doesn’t know yet is that the cowpokes are on the trail of the hooded angels, and the reason is personal.

Wes’s dad was killed back in Silver Creek by none other than Hannah, who in her grief-stricken rage even gunned down a Confederate general who tried to stop the mayhem.

Review:

Far-fetched, certainly. Gimmicky, absolutely, But the opening scene grabs you with its big-budget look and it’s brutality, and an usual plot keeps you watching.

It helps that the cast is deep with people who can actually act, an unusual find in 21st Century Westerns.

Gary Busey’s participation is of the guest star variety, but Chantelle Stander and Paul Johansson hold up well in the lead roles and Julianna Venter turns in a fine performance as Hannah’s jealous and possessive lesbian lover.

Memorable lines:

Ellie, as she leans over a wounded posse member, her knife at the ready: “Time to die.”

Hannah to Jane, on the notion that the gang settle down to a normal life: “Oh, sure, what are we gonna do? Work 14 hours a day in some God-forsaken prairie so we can all get pregnant a thousand times and die? Is that what you wanna do? I didn’t think so.”

Hannah to Wes: “See, you’re just like all the rest. You’re not mad at me for killing your pa. You’re not even mad at me for robbing those banks or butchering that posse. You’re mad ’cause you don’t care anymore. I made you love me.”
Wes: “You bitch.”
