Lost Treasure of the Incas (1964)

Lost Treasure of the Incas (1964) poster Alan Steel is William Smith and Toni Sailer is his buddy and fellow cowhand Alan Fox.

They’ve helped a rancher named Burt Nixon make a long trek to Silver City in New Mexico Territory.

But no sooner has Nixon arrived than he’s is ambushed for the $20,000 he’s carrying.

The culprits — and town leader Jerry Darmon (Mario Petri) is their leader — try to pin the murder on Smith and Fox.

Thinking they’ve gotten them out of the way, they head off on their next get-rich-quick scheme.

A band of Aztecs have made their way north, bringing a fortune in gold with them.

Darmon and partner El Puma plan to locate their secret cave, kill all the Indians they can find and make off with the bounty.

But Fox isn’t dead and Smith isn’t giving up until the men responsible for Nixon’s death are brought to justice.

So they wind up at that hidden Inca hideaway too, just as the sacrifice of Princess bride Inca (Anna Maria Polani) is about to take place.

Review:

Italy’s peplum craze was dying and its Spaghetti Western craze was beginning, resulting in some strange hybrids.

This is one of them with peplum veteran and muscleman Alan Steel leading the cast.

That being the case, he’s given multiple opportunities to shed his shirt and show off his brute strength in hand-to-hand combat.

But there are some groan-worthy moments too.

For instance, Alan Fox spends lots of time wandering through the desert with Princess Inca. And he thinks she’s a young boy. Until he has to suck snake venom from her neck.

The cast also features Brigitti Heilberg as Jenny Nixon, who’s in love with William Smith, and Dada Gallotti as saloon girl Ilona in her first Western role.

Trivia:

According to IMDb, this was supposed to be another Hercules sword-and-sandal type film. But with the unexpected success of the Spaghetti Western, the script was quickly rewritten and turned into a Western.

This marked one of six films released in 1964 starring Alan Steel. He made just 12 more. They included appearances in Spaghetti Westerns “I’ll Die for Vengeance” (1968) and “Fasthand is Still My Name” (1973).
