Road to Revenge (2020)

Road to Revenge (2020) posterKellen Garner is Travis Royal; Alexis Moeller is Lucy Royal, and they’re siblings on the vengeance trail.

Years earlier, a land grabber named William Slade (George A. Nelson) killed their father, mother and sister to obtain the water on their land.

Ever since, Travis has had revenge on his mind against every member of the Slade gang.

And Alexis had ridden by his side, trying to keep her older brother safe.

Once the gang members have been dealt with, they turn their aim to Slade himself.

But they find he’s now so rich he runs an entire town, sheriff included.

He also stages fixed boxing matches as entertainment for the crowd in his saloon.

And Travis and Lucy are stunned to discover that one of the men boxing in that saloon is their brother Brodie (Chade Green).

There’s also a mysterious stranger in town who could complicate matters, because he stays awfully close to Slade.

Review:

A well-done opening scene features Lucy as captive of outlaw Micah Grady, being threatened with all sorts of torture.

She has a problem, she confesses. Her nose itches. She asks Micah to scratch it. He slaps her across the face instead.

It’s an attention grabbing scene, and a sign of things to come.

Because in the 21st century Western sweepstakes, this one’s a winner, served up more vim and vigor than we’re used to in such low-budget affairs, with a touch of wit to boot.

And if the character motivations in that rousing climax don’t always make sense … well, it sure is fun to watch.

It helps that the folks on screen don’t seem out of place on screen. And that even goes for bit parts, like Madilyn Mel as the young saloon singer, offering songs for a dollar.

Most impressive are Kellen Garner as Travis, the sibling most hellbent on revenge, and Alexis Moeller as his spunky younger sister.

The film was released in October 2020 as Royals’ Revenge. It didn’t hit DVD until a year later.

Memorable lines:

Micah Grady, defending his scalphunting past: “I mean, what’s a dead Apache gonna do with his hair anyhow? Can’t take those braids to hell.”

William Slade: “Does the sight of blood bother you?”
Thorton: “Ain’t mine, ain’t my business.”
Slade: “That’s a strange morality.”
Thornton: “More of a theology. It’s kept me alive a long time.”

Travis Royal, after walking into an ambush with Lucy and somehow surviving: “That was not the plan.”

William Slade to Brodie’s buddy: “You’re gonna leave town, and never come back. And if you do, I’m gonna cut your tongue out and feed it to you.”

Brodie Royal: “If I’m gonna die anyway, it might as well be on a Sunday.”
Lucy Royal: “Tomorrow’s Saturday.”
Brodie: “It’ll be the first time I’ll early. The Lord will be pleased.”

Travis Royal to William Slade: “I came here to tell you a bedtime story.”
