The Whore and the Horseman (2025)

The Whore and the Horseman (2025) posterColt Williams (Matt Malone) is looking forward to his most profitable horse sale yet, one that will pay off the mortgage on the ranch left to him by his late father.

Then he gets a letter from his estranged and dying brother Jacob. It bears a simple request: That Colt travel to Denison, Texas, and take in Jacob’s wife Angel (Michelle Malone), who’s in a precarious situation.

It’ll be a two-week journey, but Colt decides to make the trip. The precarious situation? It turns out that Angel is a whore trying to escape the grip of a saloon owner named Diggs.

Caleb decides to marry Angel; his religion won’t allow him to live under the same roof with a woman otherwise. And they head back to Colt’s Mustang Creek Ranch as a not-so-happy couple.

Turns out, someone has rustled Colt’s entire herd of horses. Turns out, that someone includes brothers Sam McCall (Marshall Malone) and Johnny McCall (Michael Malone).

They have a price on their heads and an old debt to settle with Colt from the Civil War. And they’re just sure he’ll fall right into their trap in an effort to recover
his herd.

He follows sure enough. With friends Carl (Robert Long) and M.D. (M.D. Jones) in tow.

Angel’s riding along too. Turns out, she’s mighty handy to have around.

Rating 2 out of 6Review:

The Western landscape of the 2000s is littered with low-budget films where the scriptwriter has to come up with some reason the cowboys have no horses.

Here’s a low-budget, independent Western with plenty of horses. What it could have used is better cinematography, tighter editing, less crudely filmed action scenes and a wittier script to take advantage of the pairing of a whore and a hard-working rancher.

But it does offer up a pretty heart-warming story. And for all the unconvincing action scenes that proceed it, the climatic fight between hero and villain is very well done.

The film was very much a family affair. Matt Malone, who plays the horseman, and Michelle Malone, who plays the whore, are real-life husband and wife. The lead villain is played by Michael Malone, Matt’s brother.

And the film is dedicated to Dylan Christopher Malone, son of Matt and Michelle, who died in 2016 at age 23 while serving in the U.S. Navy.

Memorable lines:

M.D.: “You could use some help around here.”
Colt: “From a woman? I need somebody who can ride. Not a woman.”

Colt Williams: “I’m stuck takin’ care of my dead brother’s whore.”
Angel: “You don’t owe me or Jacob anything.”
Colt Williams: “Oh, you’re right about that. But, unfortunately, the word of God thinks different.”

Justice of the Peace: “By the authority vested in me by the Lord Almighty and the great state of Texas, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Colt Williams: “That won’t be necessary.”
Angel slaps Colt across the face, then glances at the Justice of the Peace: “Will that suffice?”

Colt Williams, recalling a horrific event from the Civil War: “I’ve never seen hate painted on such a large canvas, only usin’ three colors — blue, gray and a helluva lot of red.”
